Savoir is used when you know facts, while connaître is used when you know, or are familiar with, people, places, food, movies, books etc...
When Savoir is followed by an infinitive it means "to know how". There is another form of Savoir commonly used in the expressions "que je sache" (that I know of) and "pas que je sache" (not that I know of). The past participles are "su" and "connu", both used with Avoir.
Examples:
I know your father.
Je connais ton père.
I know your father's name is David.
Je sais que ton père s'appele David.
