The Galette des Rois is a cake shared at Epiphany, on January 6th of each year. It is now a Christian Celebration, celebrating the arrival of the Three Wise Men at Bethlehem to see Jesus, however, it started as a pagan custom.
The Romans celebrated "Saturnalia", the festival of the winter solstice, at which a King or Queen was chosen for one day, by means of a white or black bean hidden in a cake.

Nowadays, we replaced that bean with a porcelaine figurine, called a "fève" in French, hidden somewhere inside the frangipane. In France, the Galette des Rois are always sold with a paper crown. The one who finds the "fève", can wear the paper crown and be King for one day.
